Exploring Portugal beyond the tourist trail

WHAT IS GRINGO IN PORTUGAL?

GRINGOlogo_edited.png

Gringo in Portugal is a travel project focused on exploring Portugal beyond the obvious highlights. It’s about getting off the main tourist routes and discovering the places, roads, and landscapes that make the country so special.

Most of the journeys are done by road, because driving is one of the best ways to experience Portugal properly, from coastal routes and mountain roads to small villages you’d never reach otherwise. Along the way, I share real experiences, practical tips, and honest impressions of each place.

Whether you’re planning your first trip or already love Portugal, Gringo in Portugal is here to help you travel with more confidence, curiosity, and freedom — and to see more than just what appears in the guidebooks.

HOW I TRAVEL PORTUGAL?

Portugal is a country best explored at your own pace, and for me that usually means travelling by road. Whether I’m bringing my own car or hiring one locally, driving gives the freedom to leave the main routes, stop when something catches your eye, and reach places that public transport simply doesn’t.

Most journeys on Gringo in Portugal are built around road trips — combining scenic drives, small towns, and lesser‑known locations with practical information on routes, distances, and what to expect along the way.

Alongside the videos, I share the travel services I personally use and recommend, from car hire to getting around efficiently, to help you plan your own trip with confidence and flexibility.

TRAVEL TIPS AND DEALS

Planning a trip to Portugal is easier when you have the right tools. On this page, I’ve gathered travel services I personally use and recommend — whether I’m travelling with my own car or hiring one locally.

Why These Travel Deals?

I don’t list every travel service available — only the ones I genuinely trust and use. Some are essential when hiring a car, others are just as useful when I bring my own.

Every recommendation here is based on real trips and real experience travelling around Portugal. If a service stops being reliable or good value, it doesn’t stay on this page.

Accommodation in Portugal

I only use the Booking.com app for accommodation across Portugal. It’s especially useful for last‑minute bookings, with a wide range of options from hotels to apartments — often available right when plans change.

Car Hire in Portugal

Hiring a car is one of the best ways to explore Portugal, especially if you want the freedom to reach smaller towns, scenic routes, and places beyond the main tourist centres.

Even though I sometimes travel with my own vehicle, car hire remains the most practical option for many visitors — particularly for road trips, flexible itineraries, and exploring beyond cities.

My Top Pick (Premium/Experience)

SIXT.webp

Modern vehicles, strong coverage across Portugal, and a good choice for road trip travel.

Best Alternative (A Safe Bet)

Coach and Long Distance Travel

Portugal also has good long‑distance coach connections between major cities and regions.

These can work well on their own, or alongside car travel — especially if you’re combining different parts of the country into one trip.

FlixBus.jpg

An affordable and reliable way to travel between cities in Portugal and across Europe. Useful if you’re combining car travel with longer city‑to‑city journeys.

Travel Essentials

These tools are useful regardless of how you travel around Portugal — whether you’re hiring a car, bringing your own, or mixing different transport options.
